'Tis the spooky season šŸŽƒšŸ‘»šŸ•·ļø

The spooky season is upon us. I love decorating for Halloween and I used to love decorating my hamsters' enclosures too.

These were my first ever Halloween enclosure setups:

Looking back, I'm not sure that the long strips of green and orange serviettes were particularly easy for a hamster to walk on. If I was to use them again, I would definitely cut the strips up into little pieces so they would be smaller and easier for the hamster to use.

The little witches' hats, black cat and pumpkin tealight candle holders with the small gaps in are another thing I would no longer use. Just to be on the safe side, I'd avoid using anything like them where a hamster's little paw 🐾 could get caught somewhere it shouldn't.

I also much prefer the witches' broomsticks 🧹 boredom breakers I made with the edible sprays rather than the jute/sisal versions and probably would just stick with the spray versions nowadays. Although jute/sisal are generally considered hamster safe materials, I don't think I'd use that much of it on such a small item now. The edible spray versions are probably just safer and more enjoyable for a hamster as they get a treat to eat.

By the way, credit goes to Something Animal on YouTube for the original idea for the 'Boo' šŸ‘» tunnels. I remember loving them when I saw them on their channel.

The green plant pot was another thing I liked about this setup. I just had that spare at the time from my own plant 🪓 collection. I would probably make sure it was more securely supported if I used it again. It didn't look that bad, but I think it could have been better supported to prevent any possibility of the pot being knocked over or collapsing onto a hamster, especially if they decided to burrow around or underneath it.

I do feel the last Halloween themed enclosure I made for my Syrian girl Aurora was more hamster friendly though. It definitely had better sized and safer hides for a Syrian. I really liked the simple hamster safe painted tissue box which I turned into a cobweb hide. The purple Carefresh bedding worked well too. Being made up of small pieces, it was much easier for a hamster to walk across.

With all the enclosure setups I did, I liked adding static clings šŸŽƒĀ šŸ‘»šŸ¦‡ to the outside. The great thing about them is they just peel off and can be reused each year.

I also loved making my hamster safe Halloween hides, one of which you can see being used in Aurora's enclosure above. The other one was more dwarf hamster sized. Here’s how I made them:

I've got a whole playlist for Halloween over on YouTube.

If you celebrate Halloween, have fun and stay safe if you go trick or treating. šŸ‘»šŸ¦‡šŸ•·ļø
